The film received wide critical acclaim, being the best reviewed and the highest-grossing film in the X-Men film series, being highlighted by its fresh visual style and storyline. A sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, is scheduled for release on May 27, 2016 with Singer returning to direct.

As of 20 June 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past has grossed $212,394,000 in North America and $461,031,285 outside North America for a worldwide total of $673,425,285 making it highest grossing entry in the X-Men film series.

In North America, the film topped the box office during its opening weekend with $90,823,660, which is the second-highest opening weekend of the series behind X-Men: The Last Stand. For the 4-day Memorial Day weekend, it earned a total of $110,576,604.

The audience was 56% male and 59% over the age of 25.

Outside North America, the film topped the box office during its opening weekend, grossing $172,042,661, which is Fox International's biggest opening weekend. The film achieved its largest debuts in China ($39.7 million), the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($15.4 million) and South Korea ($11.8 million).
It was also the highest debut ever for a 20th Century Fox movie in 11 markets including South Korea, Brazil, the Philippines and India.
